How do I become a signed model?
This is a question that is habitually brought up. Although there is no specific rules to follow there are some guidelines that most people go by in hopes of pursuing their careers in the modeling industry. These steps will not by any means guarantee that you will be signed, but they will very much point you in the right direction on how to complete the process. Let it be known that there are very few occasions where an agent will just find you in a Walmart. For every one of those lucky ones there's thousands that are going from casting audition to casting audition. With that being said, here are my guidelines that i pray point you in the right direction!
1. Look online at specific agencies and at their talents. Review how each of the talent pose in their pictures. Where are their hands placed? What is the look in their eyes? How is their mouth shaped? You need to PAY attention to even the most minutia details. After this is finished, practice in the mirror. The mirror is your best friend in this part of the process.
2. After this is finished, try looking for a photographer that does very good camera work for some test shots. Make sure this photographer is respectable and make sure his prices for pictures are not outlandish. These pictures do not have to be 5 star quality by any means but you need to make sure that these pictures are reliable. Usual prices can range from $300 -$700 per session.
3. Once these pictures are finished, you can finally look up agency open calls and make plans on attending! Always make sure to read the qualifications on being a model for that exact agency because not only will it be very embarrassing if you show up and you are too short, or the wrong size, but this could also hurt your chances at another agency because if this agency communicates with others and makes note of how you do not pay attention to detail, then your chances with that agency are slim. Also other advice is to always arrive at least 15 minutes before your desired time.
4. While at the audition make sure to shake the hand of the agent and make eye contact. This is extremely important because you need to come out as extremely confident to the agent. There is a fine line between over selling yourself and being confident about yourself and this is something models need to realize. This is the prime time to sell yourself, and demonstrate your personality to the agent because personality is a trait that is loved in this entertainment. Lastly, ASK questions if you have any. If the agents are interested in you they will answer the question and if they do not know the answer they'll make sure to find it out somehow.
PS. Wait and choose the agency that you feel will be the most helpful and feels the most comfortable. You should not be in a rush to become signed by an agency, because some models that do this end up in sticky situations. Also, you should NEVER give money to an agent when they ask for a fee! Agents only get paid for the gigs that they book you! Agency fees range from 10-20%.
PSS. As previously mentioned, this is not the only way to get signed by a modeling agency, this is only a set of guidelines that will help point you in the right direction! If you have any questions please comment here and i will address them as soon as i have the time!
